HSC Board of Directors

We encourage anyone with an interest in HSC to join us at our quarterly board meetings. Contact HSC for specific scheduling information and directions if you would like to attend any meeting.

Contacting the HSC Board

Please contact the entire board only if the entire board needs to read your comments or questions. Questions sent to the entire board go through a process to determine the responsibility for replying. You will get a quicker response if you can direct your question to a specific board member or committee chair. If you're not sure which individual to send your question to, use HSC's general email address . All Board of Directors email addresses are listed below.

Leslie Buchanan

President - contact

I am Leslie Buchanan. I live in the Sierra Nevada mountains with my husband and four children, Damon (1991), Jacob (1992), Logan (1996) and Rowan (2003).

We always homeschooled our kids until Damon decided to attend high school this past year. This gave us a chance to look at new ways to learn and teach. It has also helped me to appreciate the freedom our homeschooling gives us. Freedom to do fun and interesting things, while allowing the boys to learn in the ways that suit them best. Our family enjoys camping, gardening, listening to various types of music and acts of daring on the trampoline. Together we care for two dogs, two white rats and five cats.

When we lived in the Central Valley I served my local support group as a newsletter editor and a board member. Now I am growing an inclusive support group in our new area, with the help of some wonderful families. I have volunteered for HSC as a county contact, e list moderator, a conference volunteer and a conference staff member. I am excited to be part of an organization that is helping preserve educational choice for families.

Kim Cameron-Smith

Secretary - contact

I live in Livermore with my husband, Philip, and our three children: Aidan (1998), Claire (2003), and Dominic (2006). Prior to homeschooling, I spent many years in various academic pursuits. I have an M.Phil. in Medieval Literature, a Masters in Theology/Religion, and a J.D. All that learning comes in handy homeschooling! I am a licensed attorney, and an active member of the California State Bar.

We decided to homeschool initially for academic reasons, but we soon discovered that the best part of homeschooling is the lifestyle. As a family, we have a rich world colored with many fascinations, grand experiments, and wonderful homeschooling friends. Best of all, I have come to know my children in a profoundly deep way.

I attended my first HSC Conference the August we started homeschooling. HSC is a marvelous example of an organization that thrives because of the passion and commitment of its members, all of us dedicated to one common goal: the good of our children. In addition to being on the Board of Directors, I am an attorney on the HSC Legal Staff.

Sarah Sample

Treasurer - contact

I live in the Central Valley of California, between orange groves, olive trees, and the Sierra Nevada foothills. My husband, Dave and I have two children, Tyler (14) and Erin (11) and we share our 5 acres with dogs, cats, pygmy goats and honey bees. My involvement with HSC began when we were just starting to homeschool Tyler, and I found out about an upcoming camping trip to Refugio State Beach. While I joined HSC for the camping, I have come to appreciate ALL the work the this organization does for homeschooling families and I have volunteered at conferences, helped with campouts, answered the 888-phone line, and have been a county contact for Tulare County for many years.

I believe that true learning takes place when you are actively involved in things that interest you, and since we all know that children pay more attention to what we do than what we say, I have tried to set a good example! Over the years I have held several positions for LLL, ran my own business, learned to snowboard, was one of the founders and am the business manager of a homeschool charter, and on occasion I still stay up all night to finish a good book. I struggle to make sense of the physical and mental disabilities that challenge my children and just as often I am awestruck by their beauty and strength.

My husband Ben and I live in Chico, Ca and have six kids Paul and Joey (1989), Sarah (1991), Sydney (1994), Evie (1995), and Sean AKA Bug (1997).  Just recently our oldest son moved out.  We have always homeschooled, sometimes through a charter school, sometimes on our own, whatever seems right at the time.  Our teens have utilized community college, in fact at 16, Paul and Joey were done with homeschooling and going to community college full time.  I suspect you would term our family unschoolers, since we tend to support our children's plans and goals more than our own.  There are plenty of things that Ben and I want the kids to know, but generally since we're always very excited about learning, the kids are excited too.  As our children have gotten older, we've seen their tendency to specialize.  Even in a family where there's a heavy interest in science they have different areas of fascination: medical research, animal behavior, engineering, etc.  Plus, we have our artist.  It's amazing to me how confident and full of self-knowledge a teen can be who has had the gift of time.  I see that very commonly in teen homeschoolers no matter their method of homeschooling.

I love HSC, and have since our first life changing HSC conference 10 years ago.  Since then, I have served twice as Conference Volunteer Coordinator, twice as  Teen Conference Committee  Supervisor, County Contact, and 888 line volunteer.  Working within HSC has been incredible.  The parents, teens and children within our organization are amazing, and the connections we make feel like a life blessing.  Volunteering is the best way I have found to connect with families, and make deep friendships.  With six kids, I can be lulled into thinking I just don't have time to give, but any time I spend always gives back more to my family than we put in.

My husband Scott and I have three wonderful children and we have lived in Fallbrook for three years now. Back in 2000 we started homeschooling our special needs daughter in 6th grade. It went so well that six months later we started homeschooling Scotty. A few months later I finally convinced my husband to let John stay home as well. Not only did I want to homeschool but I wanted to try this insane thing called unschooling. I remember sitting at Denny's trying to explain the little I could and all he kept asking was "But, what about college?" Wow, that seems so irrelevant now.

When I found myself with Jennifer at home I had no idea what I was doing or even that homeschooling existed. An over whelming number of websites come up when you google homeschooling, but I kept referring back to HSC's. I finally joined the yahoo egroup, I don't know why I waited so long. I had no idea that there was this huge population of homeschoolers. There were so many kind people reassuring me to hang in there when I feared that I had made the wrong choice. After posting "HE WROTE SOMETHING!!!" I have never looked back, never doubted my decision again.

So, why do I volunteer for HSC? I believe in HSC and its mission. I believe in the freedom to choose what is best for your family and child's individual needs. For some it is traditional public school, for others it is not. I want it to be there for the next mother who finds herself alone with her child, scared and wondering what the heck she got herself into. It all started with "If you can't keep her safe she's not coming back". Who could have known the path that lay before us would lead us here. My only regret is not starting sooner."

Do we unschool, no, do we school at home, no. I do what works for us, for them. HSC has never given me the feeling that there is only one right way to do anything.
